Professor Steve Lloyd and Dr. Francesca di Lodovico gave lectures on the physics of the Large Hadron Collider at CERN and the T2K neutrino experiment in Japan. Click here for information about this past event.

Alumni, PhD students and faculty met for stimulating conversations over lunch and coffee, which was organised by the QMUL alumni office as part of the College Alumni Reunion weekend.

String Duality event for alumni and friends

String theorists Dr. S. Ramgoolam and Dr. R. Russo from the Centre for Research in String Theory, gave lectures and answered questions from an audience of over 50 during a relaxed programme of lectures, conversation and lunch on 22nd May. Here are the slides from the talks:

GO Jones building renaming

June 2009
The renaming ceremony for the Physics building took place on Thursday 25th June, together with a celebratory lunch for alumni and visitors, and tours of the School and College. The building has been named after Professor GO Jones, Head of Department from 1953 to 1968, who planned and oversaw the its construction and led a major expansion of the Department. We were particularly pleased to welcome a number of members of Professor Jones' family to the celebrations, and for having Mrs Betty Jones unveil the plaque and give a dedication speech.

Support from Dr Edmund Gray

We gratefully acknowledge generous support from Dr Edmund Gray. Born in 1939, Edmund Gray was educated at The Royal Liberty School, Romford and joined Queen Mary College as an undergraduate in the Physics Department in 1957. On his graduation in 1960 he joined the electronics company AEI in Harlow. In 1963 he returned to Queen Mary to the Electronic Engineering Department to undertake a research degree under Dr I J Lewis. He was awarded a PhD in April 1967.

He then returned to Harlow and to the company which was now called STC where he specialized in Optical Engineering and research into Gallium Arsenide devices. This was at the earliest days of Optical Fibre technology and Dr Gray's work was a key to its advancement. He subsequently moved to the Research Department of British Aerospace, Stevenage where he continued his optics research.
Over the years, until his untimely death in April 2008 he maintained a wide range of interests being an active sportsman - he loved badminton; politics - he was a member of Harlow Labour party; the arts - he was a member of Harlow Music Society and acted as technical advisor to both Harlow and Theydon Bois DFAS and photography - he was a member of the Stereoscopic Society.
These funds are being used for an Edmund Gray PhD Studentship, which supports an extremely promising PhD student for which our current studentships are unsuitable due to restrictions or insufficiency.
