A magnetic field may be used to perturb or tune materials with delicately balanced electronic interactions. Here we show that the application of a magnetic field can induce spin-density-wave (SDW) magnetic order in a quasi-2D metamagnetic metal, where none exists in the absence of the field. This gives us the remarkable opportunity to control magnetic quantum fluctuations with a magnetic field. The material under investigation is the perovskite metal Sr3Ru2O7 which has two magnetically-ordered SDW states. We use the state-of-the-art neutron spectrometers LET and WISH to investigate magnetic excitations and order and show how these can be directly connected to the novel electronic transport and thermodynamic properties of the material.
