Alan Drew made VP-Europe of the ISMS

At the recent MuSR 2011 conference, Alan Drew was appointed as the Vice President for Europe of the International Society for Muon Spectroscopy. His main roles in the three year appointment will be to encourage membership of the society, promote muon science to those outside the research field and, with the other members of the executive committee, decide on the location of the next MuSR conference.

X-ray PDF instrument at Diamond approved

X-ray PDF instrument at Diamond

It has been formally announced that the proposal for the development of a dedicated beamline instrument at the Diamond synchrotron source for the measurement of pair distribution functions (PDF), XPDF, should now move to the design and construction phase. Our group has played a significant part in the development of the proposal for XPDF, and will be involved in it's development. This instrument, which will complement PDF instruments at the ISIS neutron scattering facility, will play an important part in our future research.

New Centre for Condensed Matter and Materials Physics

We are pleased to announce the establishment of a new Centre for Condensed Matter and Materials Physics, starting from May 1st 2011. The new Centre will be headed by Professor Martin Dove, joining us from the University of Cambridge.
The new Centre will build upon the existing expertise in the Condensed Matter Physics group at Queen Mary, and be further supported initially by two new lectureships and two PhD studentships that will be advertised shortly, together with suitable equipment and resources, with later investment also planned.
