Centre for Condensed Matter and Materials Physics launch event

Friday June 24th, 2011

We would like to welcome you to the launch event for the "Centre for Condensed Matter and Materials Physics" within the School of Physics, Queen Mary, University of London.

The event itself will consist of an afternoon of talks that highlight the role of both experiment and simulation in the work of the Centre, together with examples drawn from the materials and scientific problems that excite the members of the Centre. The talks will be followed by a reception.

Program

2.00 Bill Spence (Head of School), Welcome on behalf of Queen Mary and the School of Physics
2.20 Martin Dove, Introduction to the Centre for Condensed Matter and Materials Physics
2.40 Bill Gillin, Charge and spin transport in organic semiconductors
3.00 Anthony Phillips, Materials that shrink on heating and other anomalies: understanding material properties based on atomic motions
3.20 Coffee/tea break
3.50 David Keen (ISIS Facility), The importance of local structure, and the role of central neutron and x-ray facilities
4.20 Angelos Michaelides (University College London, Thomas Young Centre), Some recent highlights from the Thomas Young Centre: The London Centre for the Theory and Simulation of Materials
4.50 Alston Misquitta, Ab initio intermolecular potentials and Density Functional Theory: Can one learn from the other?
5.10 Kostya Trachenko, Modelling radiation damage in materials for nuclear waste encapsulation
5.30 Reception

Location

The event will be held in the main lecture theatre on the ground floor of the G O Jones building of the Mile End campus. Details of location and travel can be found on the contacts page of the school website.
